What an experience! I started out this past June working the kids out at summer conditioning and open gyms, then took on a coaching role for summer tournaments. Then I accepted the position when they offered it offically. Well... to say the least, we're not winning too many games. The kids are pretty far behind in basic basketball skills. Very interesting battling a 5-7 year skill deficit! I think I'm teaching them how to work hard, regardless of how many W's we come home with. This is a resort area, where most of these kids didn't touch a basketball in an organized situation until they were 13. I love basketball and love coaching. If anything, this rollercoaster team is teaching me to be a better coach! Go Wolverines! :)

On Payroll

Dan is working full time for ESS now. It was so great to see everyone. We hope 2010 brings more family visits. We spent Christmas Eve at Daniel's parents'. Played holidays games and had lots of good laughs and great prizes and yummy snacks. I spent all of Christmas at my mom's. Reason, Emily, Yates, Daniel, and the dogs were all there for a scrumptious dinner. My mom and I took dog walks to the river every day. One of my favorite things ever. We couldn't stay for long because I had to get back for work and basketball. Over New Year's we went on a sleigh ride with our good friends Shannon and Beaver, who were in town from Cali, plus 10 others. We got out of hand (and should have been kicked out of the restaurant if you ask me!), but had a great time eating, drinking, and being merry. Daniel got me new snow shoes for Christmas, so of course we had to break those in too. Now we're back to the grind. It's been frigid and gorgeous here. Looking forward to a ski filled weekend & month!

Taking a break on our way back down Taylor's Canyon...

I snow shoed and broke trail. Our home visits are few and far between for no good reason. We will be in our hometowns this Christmas. Daniel has been in Eatonville the past few days. He drove out with Timber this past weekend. Sounds like they're enjoying the down time and playing catchup with fam. I'll be heading out tomorrow for Elbe. Hopefully the Hailey airport doesn't get shut down due to weather! Looking forward to seeing my fam. My mom remodeled her house (the one I grew up in), and this will be my first peak at the progress! It has been passed on and on, and has landed in my lap. I LOVE The Blazer. It is a tank! Love driving it. The Blazer has had a rough fall and winter though. But... thanks to Daniel, she has new shoes, new drive belt, new pully, newly grounded lights, new fuel pump. I helped with the belt and pully, and replaced a headlight, a couple brake or tail lights, and the back window hydraulics. Just figured it was time to give her (and Daniel) a little shout out in hopes that I'll have a fantastic 2010 with The Blazer. :)

My First Tri

3 1/2 weeks out from race day, I decided to do a triathlon. Not the best training regiment. I was meeting Kim and her friends down at Lake Mead and we were all doing our first one. Long story short... I finished... and trust me, that was a huge feat!

The run down: I had a complete meltdown about 20 times during the swim. It took me FOREVER to get through the swim. I had a kayaker follow me the whole way b/c I was hell bent on not getting disqualified but I was so freaked out that I needed someone by me. I think next year I'll make Daniel come and paddle next to me. Think the race people will mind? :) The bike went awesome. Felt great. Same with the run. Feeling great on those 2 were a surprise to me because when I was practicing doing all 3 events it did not feel so good. Race day adrenaline I guess.

Gorgeous Start

Just before the 1/2 mile swim. If anyone knows me... I'm the WORST swimmer ever! I took a strokes class in college. Never left the shallow end. This tri was part of my personal vendetta with swimming. In retrospect... open water swimming is not the best venue to try and swim more than a length in a row for the first time.

On the bike portion. DEFINITELY need to train to swim more and train in open water to avoid the "black water freak out." Not so sure I want to do another in the nearest future, that is how bad the swim went. But I'm glad I took the plunge and got one under my belt.

We stayed in Vegas at the Palms after the tri. Had a great time in our room. It was one of the nicest rooms I've ever stayed in. We even went down and gambled a bit. Jeff and I won some cash on the Blackjack tables. First time I've ever played the tables.

All About Timber

Timber turned 2 on October 11th! It was 3.5 acres north of Challis, ID. GORGEOUS area. Tons of fishing, hiking, biking, hunting, etc... outdoorsman's dream area. Across the street from the Salmon River. We've been toying with the idea of getting a pice of property somewhere. This piece was steal. We found out why... the majority of the land was mountain, just a small building plot cut out was usable. So, unfortunately probably not our cup of tea, but it is fun researching property throughout Idaho and Montana and exploring them when we have free time.

Look at this view! It is one of my favorite events here! The entire weekend revolves around Ketchum's Wild West Days. Only horse drawn wagons are allowed int he parade...nothing motorized. A lot of dress up takes place to mimic the old days and the attire worn back then. The Y has a wagon each year. Here I am with Ivana and Danna who brought their kids, and Monica helped me chaperone the other15 kids. We cruised through the packed streets of town singing the YMCA song (standard). We add a Fun Run portion to try and hit a different demographic (the runners) in our area. This year we held it at the Y, which was awesome. This dominated a bit of my time, but thanks to Daniel, Timber, and Coach, our small town fun run went great. The entire event brought 150 folks out on a Saturday morning. We invited Drew this year too. We all went to George Fox together and were all roommates and now we all live in different states, so it is SOOOO great to figure out how to see each other here and there. Last year we all met up in New York City to watch games in the original Yankees Stadium before they tore it down. Darla lives in Pasadena, so we chose to do a Dodgers game this year. It was hot as blazes! 40,000 people packed in Dodgers stadium sweating on each other. On the way we stopped by my dad's house. My dad lives in Glendale, UT just outside of Zion, on the east side with his wife Peggy and all of their animals. They've lived there for about 5 years now, ever since my pops retired. They have a cute little fixer-up on a small piece of property. They have rabits and chickens and 3 gardens... great little spot for them. Peggy works for Best Friends Animal Rescue/Shelter. What a gig! Best Friends has like 300,000 acres dedicated to all sorts of animals. She brings home animals all the time... ducks, tons of miniature dogs, birds, etc. My dad still drives life-sized tonka trucks to keep himself busy during the week.

It was a great time. I haven't seen my dad in over 3 years... before I went to Germany... a sad truth. Daniel only remembers my dad from the days of our high school love hiatus, and since I didn't live with my dad back then, it was a lot of fun for them to actually meet and hang out as "men." We got there SUPER late on Day 1 of our trip... around 12:30am. Stayed up til about 2:30am having some beers and shooting the breeze while watching one amazing lightening storm.

Day 2- we had a hearty breakfast (that's what you do when you're at my dad's, you eat A LOT) then packed up the cooler, grabbed some guns, and loaded the dogs up. Peggy and my dad took the dogs in the LandCruiser, while Daniel and I followed on the 4-wheelers. We were out in the sparse (and HOT) southern Utah wilderness for most of the day looking for arrowheads, shooting guns, and having beers. On the way back, the good ol' LandCruiser had a little trouble with the heat so Daniel had to pull with his wheeler while I pushed with mine...

Pics- we came across some horses on the open range... then Daniel trying to teach Timber to ride on the back of his 4-wheeler... then I had to take a break to get the towing picture...

After we finally made it back, Will & Jess showed up shortly thereafter. Quite the family reunion, since I haven't seen them for about 4 years... They live in Fargo (yup, Fargo...). They're both in the final stretch of their PhD's (nerds!). Willy in Zoology and Jess in History.

Day 3- again, we ate a ton of food to start the day, then we headed into Zion NP. I haven't hiked in the park since I was in 8th grade, so it was so fun to see it all again up close. Daniel had never been to Zion, and since I'm a National Park NERD, I was so excited for him to see Zion. It's one of my favorites. We didn't do the hike that I really wanted to do (Angels Landing), which was probably a good thing since it was 100+ degrees out. We did an easy hike that we were able to just enjoy and take a lot of pics on. After the park, we spent some time with the extended family... grandma, uncles, cousins, etc. Again, none of us ever see each other and do a VERY POOR job at staying in touch, so it was fun to catch up. Exhausting day... so headed back for some shut eye before packing up and getting out early for Sante Fe... a 9+ hour drive southeast...

Pics- Will is a nerd with a big camera... Daniel and I with some beautiful red cliffs in the background (can't wait to go back and EXPLORE more)... the canyon sections were so beautiful, and everything was so green, very unusual for southern Utah... and the gang...

To Be Continued...

I'll be back with details and pics from our recent road trip to a home-town friend's, Amy Uberuaga, wedding. Felt awesome to cruise around with everything we needed on our backs for the first time all summer. We took some books and read. Took naps. I had been wanting to actually train for the race so my body would feel good afterwards and during, but I just never got around to training for the run. A local shop in town puts this race on each year. There is a 10 mile option and a 16.5 mile option. Of course I'm not crazy enough to run 16.5 miles for fun (just yet at least!) so I opted for the 10 mile run. I've started to enjoy running trails since I moved here and I had never experienced and organized backcountry event, so I decided Why Not? So... the night before as Daniel ordered up some pizza, I fully comitted and made some spaghetti.

I won't lie... it wasn't easy... but it was fun! The first bit was OK, but when we started to climb up Griffin's Butte at the 5 mile mark, I was thinking "why the hell did I decide to do this???!" I made buds with this chick named Erin and we just powered through the climb of it together. Once we summited, I let 'er rip and cruised downhill. And, much to my surprise with the rough conditions of the trail, I didn't fall once! I had a close one, but managed to save myself. I feel good about finishing in 1:34. I was 9th for my age group. Great experience.

Ritter

Josh Ritter came to town a few weeks back to open for G Love. I love it up there. It is so gorgeous. Redfish Lake is outside of Stanley over Galena Pass, about an hour north of Ketchum. Coach, Moe & her dad, Daniel & I, and the pooches piled in with Coach's hunting boat in tow and headed up to the bakery for some yummy breakfast pre-beachtime. We found a perfect spot on the beach without too many people around us.

The dogs were obsessed with every stick. Duke has to always find the hugest log on the shore to play with. Then we throw the "sticks", Duke swims out and fetches it, and once Duke gets in shallow water Timber runs over and snatches it from him. Timber isn't much of a swimmer... it's sad. We're hopeful that one day he will be though.

The boys took care of the boat.

Smooches were had by all.

And we finalied the day by listening to some live bluegrass music and having the best pulled pork sandwich ever! Last week I got to take a group of teens on a river rafting trip up north on the south fork of the Payette River. How lucky am I !?!?! Got there by driving a mini-bus over the pass. The trip to the Payette River Company's headquarters was a little over 2 hours. That time framed allowed for about 157 "Are we there yets?" The kids were little hellions, but I love hellion kids so it was loads of fun. We only had to get the first aid kit out one time. It was a great "I told you so" moment because I had just been telling the 2 ring leaders to slow their rolls and one fell on some rocks at lunch and tore up his knee (he ended up being fine). The section of the river we took was called The Canyon. Got to experience about 15 class 3 and 4 rapids and even had to get out and tow our boats over the canyonesque shore to bypass five 7-20 foot waterfalls that created a rather dangerous section. The trip was so fabulous. I was in heaven on the river. So gorgeous! Don't have any pics of the actual trip sicne I don't have a waterproof camera (I need your camera, Shannon!) but here is a pre-launch pic of the group.

Our new digs

Just a few new things going on around here...

Timber in the back of the truck with our NEW canopy!

Our new barbeque

Tomatoes coming in!

And our lettuce! Drew was here all weekend. By Friday night Drew considered himself a "townie."We spent A LOT of time at the Cellar Pub running game on the shuffle board table. We cruised the gallery walk. We took our bikes to the 4th of July parade. We played tons of horse shoes at Beaver's house. We caught a movie at the Magic Lantern. We took the lift up Baldy to see our beautiful valley from above. Pretty low key and nothing fancy... just did what the locals do and Drew seemed to love it. It was so great having an ol' pal around. One highlight is that we saw Dean! Dean from Gilmore Girls. Yup, he was playing Buck Hunter with some philly. :)

On top of Baldy... the beautiful Pioneers in the background

Pretty standard horseshoe form

At the parade

And how about having this guys job!

I LOVE 4th OF JULY!

4th of July weekend is almost here! I love the 4th of July! Last year I was in New York City with Darla watching the Yankees lose to Boston (which was amazing!) so this will be my first Sun Valley 4th! Our buddies (Shannon & Beaver) that moved away about 2 months ago will be here to visit. We're so excited to see them. Also, an old college friend (that used to sleep on my living room floor) is coming to visit! Drew still lives in the Portland area and this will be our first visual contact since I moved out here. Daniel and I are planning on taking Drew for some good hikes and bikes, possibly camping, but for sure going to the Rodeo and the 4th of July Parade. Should be a blast! Stay tuned for photos...

Other than the anticipation of a great weekend, we have some new things in our life.... While I was away coaching at a high school basketball tournament this past weekend, Daniel got us a little surprise! I came home to a new canopy on the truck! We've been keeping our eyes peeled for a canopy that we wouldn't have to buy brand new. It's been a bear trying to find one that fits our truck... but sure enough, Daniel did it! Timber was a little unsure about it at first, but he loves it now. It'll be so great for camping this summer, our road trip we're planning at the end of July, and during the winter, etc etc etc.

After nearly a solid month of rain, which was so endearing and reminded us of home sweet home, the sun is finally shining on a daily basis in Sun Valley. It's been great getting beautiful hikes in, especially since wild flowers are out in full bloom and the mountainsides are as green as ever before right now!

I'll come bearing photos next time! Until then... Happy 4th of July!
Loves, L&D

First Camping Trip of the Year!

We have moved. Found a cheaper place up the road about a mile from our old place. This new place is so great! It's super small and pretty rustic, but we're loving our little mountain chateau! In the midst of our moving angst, we decided to get the heck away from the piles of who-knows-what and go camping!

This is Matt and his dog Pete. Cut up an old tent and attached it to the back of the truck. Then, threw our spare bedroom mattress from our old place in the bed of the truck, and wa-la! We have a perfect sleeping situation. Didn't get wet. Didn't have an achy back. Timber got to sleep with us. Can't ask for much more. I'm pretty proud of this... was dreaming it up for about 32 hours and it all fell into place in about 20 minutes. Perfect set up until we can get a canopy! :)

Timber....

The boys and their dogs. And she had a themed party... it was Cholas! Yup... that's a few of us... we came rolling up to the bars in a Chrystler New Yorker. Needless to say, Daniel got hozed into helping me with one of the stations I set up. Here he is operating the Limbo station. Participants got a riddle-ish clue that they had to guess what business it was leading them to. Once they arrived at the correct location they had an activity awaiting them. Limbo-ing with cross country skis on was this one. Also had spam sandwich eating, schooner chugging, bowling, etc. It was a great event!

Moe & Coach got second place!

The day after Valentine's Day, Daniel decided that we should go on a beginner touring hill...
